Brie — Privacy Policy
Effective: September 29, 2026 Last updated: September 29, 2026
This policy explains what Brie Labs Inc. ("Brie", "we", "us") collects when you use the Brie app or itsbrie.com, why we collect it, who we share it with, and how long we keep it.
We've written it to be read. Where something is unusual, we say so plainly rather than burying it.

1. Who we are
Brie Labs Inc., a Delaware corporation, 28 Geary St, Ste 650-1720, San Francisco, CA 94108, United States. We are the controller of the personal information described here. Contact us any time at hello@itsbrie.com.
Brie is for people 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor is using Brie, write to hello@itsbrie.com and we will remove the account.
2. What we collect
### 2.1 Information you give us
| What | Details | | -------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Account | Phone number, date of birth, name or display name. | | Profile | Photos, gender, who you're looking for, hometown and neighbourhood, and anything else you choose to add. | | Brie answers | Your responses to Brie's questions. You decide what to answer. | | Selfie | A selfie used to verify that you are the person in your profile photo. See Section 4. | | Instagram handle | The handle you enter, and the verification code you send us by direct message. See Section 5. | | Saved handles | Handles you save for people who aren't on Brie yet. See Section 6. | | Contacts | If you allow it, the names and phone numbers in your phone's address book. See Section 7. | | Messages | The content of your conversations with other members. | | Support | Anything you send us when you contact hello@itsbrie.com. |
### 2.2 Information collected automatically
| What | Details | | ------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Location | If you grant permission, your device's latitude and longitude. See Section 8. | | Device and technical | Device model, operating system, app version, device identifiers, IP address, and language. | | Usage | How you use Brie — screens viewed, features used, likes and passes, when you log in, and crash and error reports. |
### 2.3 Information we generate
Compatibility results. We calculate a compatibility result from your answers and another member's, and select written insights from a library to explain it. See Section 9.
3. Why we use it
- To run Brie — create your account, build your profile, show you people, deliver your messages, and produce your compatibility results. - To verify identity — confirm you are the person in your photos, and that you own the Instagram handle you claim. - To keep people safe — detect and act on fraud, spam, harassment, impersonation, and rule-breaking; investigate reports; prevent removed members from coming back. - To improve Brie — understand what works, fix what doesn't, and develop new features. - To communicate — send you service messages, respond to your support requests, and (if you opt in) send you updates. - To meet legal obligations — comply with law, respond to lawful requests, and establish or defend legal claims.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not run advertising on Brie.
4. Your selfie and face mapping
To confirm you are the person in your profile photo, we compare your selfie to that photo using face-mapping technology provided by Amazon Web Services (Amazon Rekognition). We repeat this comparison whenever you change your profile photo.
- The face map produced during that comparison is biometric information. AWS computes it for us. We do not store the face map — we keep only your selfie and the result of the comparison. - Your selfie is never shown on your profile and is never shared with other members. - We keep your selfie while your account is active, and delete it within 30 days of account deletion, and in any event within 3 years of your last activity on Brie. - We never sell, lease, trade, or otherwise profit from biometric information.
Full details, including our retention and destruction schedule, are in our Biometric Data Policy. If you live in Washington or Nevada, please also see our Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy.
5. Instagram verification
To verify that you own an Instagram handle, you send a code by direct message to Brie's Instagram account. We use Meta's official Instagram API to check that the code arrived from that handle.
We receive and store the handle, the Instagram account identifier, and the fact and time of verification. The message you send is visible to our team, because a person may need to check a verification manually.
We use this information only to verify handle ownership and to connect you with anyone who saved your handle before you joined. We do not use it to build a profile of you, and we do not collect your Instagram followers, the accounts you follow, your posts, or your photos.
6. Handles saved for people who are not on Brie
This one is unusual, so here it is in full.
If you search for someone who isn't on Brie yet, you can save their handle. When you do, we store the handle you typed and the fact that you saved it. We do not create a profile for that person, and we do not collect any information about them — not their name, photo, posts, or anything else. The handle sits in our database and is shown to nobody.
If that person later joins Brie and verifies that handle, we tell them that someone saved it before they joined — without ever revealing who. We ask whether they'd like to appear in that member's queue. If they say no, nothing happens and the person who saved it is never told. If they say yes, they appear with a saved marker.
We keep saved handles indefinitely, because someone may join years after they were saved. We do not use them for any other purpose.
If you are not a Brie member and want a handle removed, email hello@itsbrie.com with the handle and we will delete it. You do not need an account to ask, and we will not ask you to create one.
7. Your contacts
If you allow it, Brie uploads the names and phone numbers from your phone's address book. We use them for two things: so you can block people you know before they ever see you, and — where you ask — to suggest people you already know who are on Brie.
Contacts are stored on our servers in a form we can match against, and access is restricted to the small number of people who need it. We do not use your contacts for marketing, we do not send anyone messages or invitations, and we never contact the people in your address book.
You can revoke contacts permission at any time in your device settings. When you delete your account, we delete your uploaded contacts immediately.
8. Location
If you grant location permission, we collect your device's precise latitude and longitude. We want to be clear about what that means:
- We store your device's coordinates and update them when your device moves more than about one kilometre. - We use them to help you set your neighbourhood and hometown, and to show you relevant people. - Only your neighbourhood or hometown name is shown on your profile — never your coordinates and never your exact location. But we do store the coordinates. - When you search for or drop a pin on a place, we send those coordinates to Google Places to turn them into a place name. Google's response is cached, and it may contain a postal code and formatted address for that place. We don't use those as data about you, but they can sit in that cached record.
You can turn location off at any time in your device settings. Features that depend on it will stop working.
9. Compatibility results and AI
How Brie's insights are made. The written insights you see were composed in advance using artificial intelligence and reviewed by our team. When you and another member complete Brie's questions, our system selects insights from that library based on your results.
Your answers, profile, and messages are not sent to any third-party AI provider. No live AI model reads your data.
Compatibility results are informational only and are not advice — see Section 6 of our Terms of Use.
10. Who we share it with
Other members. What you put on your profile is visible to members who can see you. Your messages go to the person you send them to.
Service providers. We use these companies to run Brie. They act on our instructions and may not use your information for their own purposes.
| Provider | What it does | What it sees | | ------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------- | | Google Cloud Platform | Hosting and database | All stored data | | Cloudflare R2 | Photo and media storage | Photos, selfies | | Vercel | Website hosting | Site traffic data | | Firebase Authentication | Phone number sign-in and SMS codes | Phone number | | Firebase Cloud Messaging | Push notifications | Device push tokens | | Amazon Web Services (Rekognition) | Face comparison for verification | Selfie and profile photo | | Google Places | Turning coordinates into place names | Coordinates you search or pin | | Meta (Instagram API) | Instagram handle verification | Instagram handle and verification message | | Resend | Transactional email | Email address | | Sentry | Error and crash reporting | Technical and device data | | PostHog | Product analytics | Usage and device data | | Expo EAS | App builds and updates | App and device data |
Safety and legal. We may disclose information to law enforcement or others where we believe in good faith it is necessary to comply with law or legal process, to protect the safety of any person, or to establish or defend legal claims.
Business transfers. If Brie is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, personal information may transfer. We will tell you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
11. How long we keep it
When you delete your account, it becomes invisible and inaccessible immediately. Full erasure completes within 30 days. Here's what happens to each category.
| Category | Retention | | -------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | | Profile, photos, Brie answers | Deleted within 30 days of account deletion | | Your copy of your messages, and your identity in conversations | Deleted within 30 days of account deletion | | The other member's copy of your conversation | Retained — see below | | Selfie | Deleted within 30 days of account deletion; in any event within 3 years of last activity | | Face map | Not stored — computed at the moment of comparison and discarded | | Uploaded contacts | Deleted immediately on account deletion | | Device location coordinates | Deleted within 30 days of account deletion | | Saved handles | Kept indefinitely — see Section 6 | | Phone number, to prevent removed members from returning | Kept indefinitely — see below | | Records of abuse reports and safety investigations | 12 months | | Access and server logs | 90 days | | Security incident logs | 12 months | | Support correspondence | 24 months | | Aggregated and de-identified analytics | Kept indefinitely; we do not attempt to re-identify it | | Anything subject to a legal hold | Until the matter concludes |
About your messages. A conversation belongs to two people. When you delete your account, we delete your copy and remove your identity, and the other member keeps their own conversation history — they will see the messages you sent them, attributed to a deleted account. We cannot delete someone else's record of a conversation they took part in.
About your phone number. When you delete your account we keep your phone number so that a member we have removed for breaking our rules cannot simply sign up again. We store it as-is, with restricted access. If you deleted voluntarily and want it removed too, email hello@itsbrie.com and we will delete it.
12. Your choices and rights
Wherever you live, you can:
- See and correct your information — most of it is editable in the app; for anything else, email hello@itsbrie.com; - Get a copy of your information; - Delete your account — see How to Delete Your Account; - Withdraw permissions for location and contacts in your device settings at any time; - Turn off notifications in your device settings.
To make a request, email hello@itsbrie.com. We will respond within 45 days. We may need to verify your identity first, and we will only use what you send us for that purpose.
We will never treat you differently for exercising these rights.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights and the right to appeal a decision we make about your request, or to complain to your state attorney general. Email hello@itsbrie.com and we will tell you what applies to you.
Washington and Nevada residents: see our Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy. Illinois residents: see our Biometric Data Policy.
13. Security
We protect your information with encryption in transit, encryption at rest, access controls limiting who on our team can see what, and logging of administrative access.
Your messages are stored on our servers and are not end-to-end encrypted. We can technically access them, and we do so only where necessary to investigate a report, comply with law, or protect someone's safety.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your information, we will notify you as required by law.
14. Where your information is held
Brie is operated from the United States and your information is stored and processed there. If you use Brie from outside the U.S., you understand that your information will be transferred to and held in the United States.
15. Changes
We may update this policy. We will post the new version with an updated effective date and, for material changes, notify you in the app or by email before it takes effect. Previous versions remain available at itsbrie.com/privacy/archive.
